Here is an interesting long distance dirt route (80%) traveling North (Montana) to South (New Mexico) through the US. Click on the "Continue" for some great pictures of the route.

Thanks, Bump! That's some damn good stuff.
Looks like a perfect XR650R ride, too.
Gotta add that to the "must ride" list!

well, if I see you on the trail ...
You better pass me at 90, in a wheelie, with you left middle finger fully extended!

Lol!
Well, only if you are riding one of them GS1200ADV "sofas," with a latte in the cup holder, while talking on your satellite phone.
It actually would not be too expensive to have a bike hauled to Montana and do that ride.... I miss the lakes and scenery of Idaho, Montana and Colorado. New Mexico? Some of the coolest people in the nation....
Hmmmm.... I better start generating more income.

Sofa King Smooth!
I'd bet that one of those R1200GSs all hoe-dadded up with all the poser stuff weighs as much as the FJ1200 I had in college. When I had that FJ, all my buds were incredulous at one of us having such a behemoth. My other two bikes at the time were a Honda CX650T Turbo and a Honda 500 Interceptor.
That said, every friend who asked to "borrow it" for an overnight up the coast with a girl came back saying that was the best bike they'd ever ridden. Fast, smooth, heaps of torque, simple, no bad habits, comfortable, good binders...
But I can't imagine riding something that heavy in the dirt!
