NM or AZ Pig Ride?

Post  AtomicXRer on Mon Sep 28, 2009 9:18 pm

Several members have talked about a group pig ride...I have a location that would be great to ride (I've ridden this a few times) here in NM and in the winter (it would have to be southern part of the state where it will be hopefully snow-free...It would be approximately 2 or 3 days of riding. The areas would be monticello box canyon (nearly 90 stream crossings in 8 miles), palomas gap (rock climbing), and then quebradas blm (haul ass dirt). If there is enough interest, I would be willing to start a thread to set this up...of course this means a trip for some of you.

George:

You have my interest, for sure.

I bet I can drum up some interest with some of the local Tucson riders, as well.

Would your projected ride be big bike and smaller bike friendly, or do you want to keep this an XR650R ride?

Thanks for probing into the possibility of making this happen.

Dave

Ok, looks like there is some interest.

As for what size/type bike, it will require that the bike be dual sported (street-legal), have a range of 100 miles on a tank, and must be able to go 60 mph. This is because some of the locations will require state highway slabbing to get to and there are few gas station between some points. Given these requirements, it definitely rules out some of the smallish bikes, but it can be done on a klx250 or xt250. I will ride my XRR, but others are welcome to bring whatever they want. On the other end size, a big GS is a no-no.

I can post a track and some pictures of other times in these areas to wet the appetite. I can do this in a few days. Ride start point would probably be Magdalena, NM off of US Hwy 60....this makes it easier for the AZ guys to get to.

Timing, I am open to whenever the most can make it. Maybe put it well enough in advance so that we could plan. When do you guys prefer? Maybe before or after all the holidays, say mid-Nov or maybe late Jan???

George:

10-4 on the bike requirements. I'm guessing the GS 1200's are out, but the smaller "big" ADV bikes are ok? Yeah, it's a tough call, I'm sure. Perhaps a rating of the trip difficulty would help (?). There's always the RawHyde rating system: http://www.rawhyde-offroad.com/explores_dif.html when in doubt.

As far as timing goes, I hate the cold and river crossings, but that's just me. Smile

A track posting would be awesome.
