Soft luggage options?

Given the character of the XR650R, I think the best bag solution is the giantloopmoto.com bag.

+1 for the giant loop bag. better than anything else out there. love mine.

I prefer Ortliebs myself. Waterproof, no rack required. I've never tried the giant loop, but it appears easier to access the ortliebs (on one side or the other) frequently. Leaves room on top for more.

I've been using the Ortliebs also. Only complaint is that they get airborne when I jam through the rough stuff. SFXR, did you do anything to keep them tight against the bike? Might try dirtbag bars and some straps.

themansfield; i've never really been in "the rough stuff". My KLR chewed the tie-down straps years ago, so they could be like dog ears in the wind a little bit if I ever got some air!

I've been using ortliebs with the Turbo city denali rack, the bags strap to the rack and that keeps them from flopping around. I've jumped, hillclimbed, singletracked and gravel roaded with this setup and it works well.

I've been looking at that Denali rack...nice unit, but serious coin. I'd also worry about twisting it all up in a good layover. Today I worked out a strap system that keeps the bags hugging the plastics pretty well. On the left side I cut a little slit in the filter cover just under the airbox so I can get a strap through it right to the subframe there. The other end goes over the bag and hooks up to my luggage rack near the seat bolts. On the right side I made an aluminum triangle bracket that attaches to an exhaust mounting bolt and a side panel bolt. The other corner juts back under the panel near the muffler and I put a low-profile strap tie down outboard of the panel witrh a bolt through to the triangle corner on the inner side. The strap attaches to this, goes over the bag, and attaches up to the luggage rack. I'll try to get some pics up. Seems to pull the bags in pretty well, even with weight. We'll see if it all holds up next weekend....

The brace was $100 but when I got it I saw why. It's all stainless steel, light and very strong. Round tubing even! Plus it doesn't cause any problems with compressing the rear suspension to the limit.

I have around 2000 miles on my dirt bagz and could not be happier.
