XR 650 R fuel tanks

Just want to hear other peoples opinions / experiences on /with aftermarket fuel tanks .

I am looking at the big Acerbis tank it looks good on the pictures but i have never seen one in flesh , do they affect the riding position ? Any problems with them ?

My second choice would be the clarke tank but not sure about the looks .

This is a common mod for the piggy , i hope we create some usefull info here for people who are interested in getting more miles out of the tank .

The last ride I went on where I used every drop of fuel I got 110 miles on a tank and I think mine is the Clark or IMS 4.6 or 4.2 I'm not sure.

What really sucks is not having a crossover on the tank. There's a whole gallon on the left side you cant get to unless you dump the bike over to slosh fuel to the other side. I'm building a crossover now but its not as easy as I thought it would be. I've got a pretty good design now but its taken a couple iterations. I just don't want a leak or to drill holes in my tank for something fun to do.

I haven't been on the bike with the OEM tank on but I'm sure the weight difference with full tanks would be noticeable. I wouldn't go more than a 4.6 though. Its pretty big but I think It's just about right. Unfortunately you do have to take the tank off to get to the spark plug and to the carb. I know Acerbis makes a 6.2 but that is just crazy huge.

Thats my knowledge with tanks. I'll post plans on how to build the crossover once I get it done and it works.

Acerbis is farging wide, you darn well will notice it so yes it does affect it.
A Clarke I got (on my 230) but am not impressed with the quality. Yeah, it works, but not too fond of it. The fuel tap sits with self tapping screws for crying out loud, but be your own guest!
Got dual IMS's, and am deadhappy with what I got!! Also got their large tanker and no, it's not too wide, in fact one doesn't notice its size once on the bike.
So... may I recommend IMS? Translucent too, just watch how much fuel you've got left.

Fuel tanks.

The Acerbis Sahara 6.3 gallon tank. Hold a lot of fuel which you probably won't use. Affects handling. The Acerbis Sarha tank splits your legs apart like your humping a 55 gallon steel drum. If you are tall, it is not comfortable.

I should sell my Acerbis Sahara tank.

The Clarke 4.3 gallon tank is all around much better than the Sahara. The only problem is fitting fuel lines and working on the carb/motor. You will have to pull the tank.

Never tried the IMS 3.2 gallon tank. I could probably use this tank. The Clarke 4.3 gallon tank it is hard to use the last 1/3 to 1/2 gallon of fuel. The fuel just sits in the lower left corner of the tank. So, the 3.2 gallon tank would be a good bet.

How far are you really going to ride?

Mine must be an IMS 4.6 gallon tank then. Everything has a brass insert molded into the tank and I'm very happy with the quality, very solid. I'm scared of the self tapping screws... The translucent tank is a almost a must, well for me anyway. I want to see how much fuel I have left.

the big IMS tanker holds 27 liters - and I'm looking for another 30 liters-total bladders, admittedly for a particular stretch. But this tanker has advantages, 'remote' is here (and Oz), it's why I've got it.
Worth knowing for the OP is it comes with a Mikuni vacuum pump which almost sucks it dry too, no wastage in this respect. The smaller IMS (4.2 gallon?) does not, and needs tilting to get the last bit out - quite like most if not all.
Neither of them have this "55 gallon drum" effect (quite a nice description) because especially the big one goes low, lower than the carb (hence the pump).

Just did this ride and I had a full 6.3 Gallons (or whatever you want to say it holds).
