Air Filter Screen AKA Flame Trap PN 17214-MBN-670

Post  Icelander-XR650R on Sat May 18, 2013 5:22 am

So, the XR came with a UNI filter which is in good shape. I bought a Twin Air so I can clean and oil one when I have a minute and switch it out with no waiting during service. The UNI has a built in screen, the Twin Air does not. As the bike didn't come with a screen I was just going to order one from Honda but was curoius as to what you guys have come up with before I place the order. I though about expanded metal, perforated metal ect... However, the problem with these in IMHO is that they will have pressure points around the outside of the screen. These pressure points combined with the wee bit of vibes the the bikes puts out razz does not seem like a good idea. The image of the screen on MRCYCLES.COM shows the border around the edge...I'm sure most of you know what is looks like as you have one!

So, if you will let me now what you used if something other than the OEM 'Flame Trap'

Thanks cheers

OEM screen is the best , Does not restrict the airflow as some think ( We know who ) , and it does what its meant to do and that is it prevents your airfilter from catching fire when the beast backfires ( and they do ) , the xr's only and similar only hold the filter in place , but you better carry small fire extinguisher with you if you buy that junk . And you tell this to someone who's got a UNI with built-in screen - ever seen that "screen"?
Holes big enough for a space shuttle to fly through sideways, not so XRs' screen - which is super, and lets the most air through indeed, you're right. About 49 liters of air per second have to go through, ever given that a thought?

Have a go on a dyno with both types measure the power output , then come back and tell me i was right razz

The difference in HP is 0, nothing , zilch , nada , the only difference is that you have nice chance to use your bike for a barbeque BRP smile
