Axle holder stud and water in swingarm

Just had my front wheel out for the first time. One of the studs holding the axle holder on the fork was snapped. The previous owner obviously knew as the nut and snapped end was superglued over the hole!!


Just been reading that the studs are threaded into the fork so I'll have a go at getting it out tomorrow.

Also i removed the rear wheel adjusting bolts and had a lot of water pour out of one side. I've read a lot of people drill small holes in the underside for drainage. Many people seem to tap the hole and put in a bolt. Any advantage to this over having just a small open hole?

Take your time with removing the stud, it it looks like it won't come out and there is enough thread to screw a nut on, then do just that screw a nut on and then use a 5mm drill and drill the top of the broken stud the nut will ast like a guide to make sure your in the middel.....once you have a centre mark then drop down to something like a 3 or 4mm drill and start drilling the stud...make sure you hold the drill square to the forks in all directions, you might find the stud come out as you drill inwards.... I have just removed the disc bolts on my 1300 which wouldn't budge even with a long bar, after drilling they came out dead easy with an eazy out/stud extractor...

If your not planning on riding in water then I would just drain out and dry out your arm and leave it be....otherwise drill a small 3mm hole at the back end of the arm on both sides ?.

Small holes in the swingarm are good idea as it lets the water out , little plug even better as it stops the dirt from entering you just need to unplug it now and again to let the water out .
I have filled mine with polyurethane foam and i only ride in dry weather so it should be ok

The broken stud came out fairly easily with a pair of mole grips. New stud ordered. £1.80.   

A couple of 4mm holes drilled in the swing arm, and a cup full of water poured out. I'll search the garage for some rubber grommets to plug them up with.

  

A small blob...and I don't mean Frosty will seal the holes up if you have any silicon sealant knocking about ?
