Nononono Mauser, YOU pestered me to buy yours, YOU bullied me in abusing my poor piggie, YOU....
Oh wait no, you were the good chap who actually found my unit, you sourced mine, the correct & rare version with the proper number - for which, still, my honest thanks Mate!  Bump
The additional 1000-revs (ie more, a higher ceiling) I see as a drawback, however the low-down more-urge, a bit more torque, I find a blessing. This is done by a little more advance of the ignition, it's what this boxie does.
So, if that's your reasoning for wanting one by all means do.... IF you can find one, the correct one, as they're scarce! The Denso-number on the sticker varies, and only 1 is the correct one... and no, no idea anymore what the number is but google around for this.

Will this unit damaged the engine, and will I see a big improvement?

IT will not damage the engine , what will damage the engine is if you start revving it higher than intended by honda as the xr400 cdi allow the engine to rev higher , = higher revs = more wear , especialy on a BIG single , just my two pences .

Alright chaps,

Been lurking on the sidelines for a while, this is my first post. Its nice to see other folks with the same passion as me for the pig.
I'll post on the main discussion later with a proper intro/pics.

I found the CDI unit in question on ebay last year… cost about £70 posted. Not used it yet as I've not finished rebuild yet.
The CDI reqd is the  Xr 400 '96-'97 model unit with serial no ending 2650.
Hope this helps.

Cheers

Hey Mauser, since when does a stiff upper lip Englishman greet a Scotsman???
He's from yonder the cairns, over the hills etc, so why care.... because he's into pigs??????
 Bump
LOL
Yo Scottie, welcome here. No normal dudes 'ere as we ride piggies hence must have zero guts and what else all is pathetic...
Yip, that number rings a bell - or, in your case, should that be a Bells?
Cheers  BRP smile

Yo FlyGuy,

Remind me to look into your shed/house/mansion/palace the day I tour the Highlands, as I concur fully!
Dimple anyone, and I'm not talking about those cute things some girls have just above their rear cheeks?
Oh hold on, I am too, but they're all great!  BRP smile Bump
Mind though, that will be after I clock in at Maus' as he serves tea - and an Earl Grey I've never turned down yet!

That's me, off to hunt this weekend.
Might kill a piggie though, but rest assured it won't be a red one  pirat

Rereading this thread again, Mauser, you owe it to yourself to get one of these untis!
I have zero doubt you will ever see a high rev-ceiling, however I also am absolutely sure you will love the 'nicer' torque low down.

Oh, no, sorry Squire, mine is not for sale  BRP smile

Here's some info I wrote about the XR400 CDI. There's a specific model you want. The 400 CDI you'd order is not night and day better than your stock 650 CDI but it is better. I scored an older CDI; the good model number, off ebay. Makes a noticeable difference. It does extend the rev limit but who cares. If you're riding at the limiter all the time its high time you shift into 2nd... It won't hurt your 650. It'll make it run crisper and have a bit better throttle response. Moral of the story? I have one, I like it, I recommend it and your XR wont grenade.

Mauser,

can I give you a present?
I'll pay for this unit advertised, you buy, keep & use it!
Mail me your PayPal addy and I'll bounce the funds in.
Would be a good way to thank you for sourcing mine  Bump

If, after having tried it, you do NOT like it then I suggest I'll pay for the postage too to get it here.... however I hunch you're going to hang on to it like a tight Scotsman clinging to his scotch  BRP smile

Serious though, offer stands!
You will like it, geez man, trust a Boer pls?

Well at least someone trustworthy have bought it , so you can test it and let me know what the difference is , cannot believe everybody over here because some of them are having " trouble to keep the front tyre on the ground " and " doing power wheelies in the third gear " since installing aftermarket Exhaust system .................. You know what i mean Mausie  StirPot

Ah, LOL, missed that bit.
A ludicrous price, I'm sure the bloke thinks 'a sucker is born everyday'...

So, you have a 2650-unit? If so I'm interested to hear what you think about its effects...  Bump
