Beaver from OZ

Post  beaver350 on Fri Jun 20, 2014 10:33 am

Greetings gentlemen and ladies if any. Bought my XR650R new in 2004, finally decided to join a site of enthusiasts (only took me 10 years yeah i know i'm a bit slow  shrug ). For those old enough to remember back to the 80's my previous bikes were XR200RD 1983, XR500RC 1982.I was the proud owner of the XR500 for 20 years, yeah true story. In 2004 took the plunge and treated myself to the 650, out of the showroom here they were strangled (i guess you call it CORKED) standard gearing was 15/41 and had the power of an out of tune lawnmower.I requested mine to be UNCORKED before delivery, the dealer took care of that and i must say even the standard engine has more than enough power for me to kill myself quite easily, top speed with 15/41 gearing about 180 kmh ,i think about 112 mph.I live at sea level with mild temps. so i guess i am getting good bang for the buck from a standard engine.I have left the bike stock (carb, exhaust, engine etc.) but has road tyres fitted to stock rims, current mileage is 10800 km, about 7000 miles. Hoping i can absorb some of the wisdom of all you XR650 gurus and get good advice if needed  bow bow blah blah  ,for those who bother to read this cheers and long live XR's

There is only a couple of us up here that have them, quite a few more down your way around Brissy though.
A guy down that way has built a replica X-1 Johnny Campbell Baja bike, looks pretty slick, think he's from Brisveags too.
Another couple of blokes have ridden the Simpson and Flinders on them, both out of Brisbane. I can send you links to the different places where to find these if you like.

You need to upload your pics to somewhere like photobucket, then link to them from here when you create a reply.
Everyone will love the Beaver pics, trust me...

Welcome!  cheers

Its rare to even hear of an XR still in the hands of its original owner.  I prefer finding the bikes that have been used and abused, pay a premium for them then sink even more money into them to make them amazing...

Its a sickness, and stupid...  dummy

Lots of really good info here though. If you want power and wild or to just take care of your beast.

Welcome.

Thanks all, just got home to reply (TRUCK DRIVER) not always in front of the pc.I see there is a large selection of technical advice here in this site, i even finally decided to purchase a 68s pilot jet after 10 years, the carb still has a 65s. Want to find out what i've been missing out on with the new jet  beat head asking for it dummy  next mission will be to download pics.

I just commented on your picture thread, but didn't realize you were also a new member so welcome! I'm a new member too and from what I've seen so far, there seem to be a swell bunch of guys (gals?) on here. I will have to say I'm a tad jealous that you've had your bike since new. I wish I had been in a good financial state when these bikes were new. Unfortunately my bike was 11 years old when I bought it. I've been riding XR's my whole life and I they just can't be beat.
