Partially Uncorked?

This may not apply to many on this forum, as most are from the UK and not saddled with the draconian CARB measures and regulations CA riders have to face, but I'll ask any way....

Was combing over my XRR (CA model) and noticed the PO hadn't removed the two airbox intake baffles.

Bike does have a 175/68s combo in the carb and an XR's Only Exhaust Pipe (w/Turn Down Tip); however, throttle response still feels a little anemic.

I haven't checked yet, but since the PO left the airbox baffles in, I'm thinking he may have left the CA restrictive D-Shaped Intake Manifold/Insulator Boot in.

So...all this to ask, if the D-shaped boot is still in there, do you thing carefully cutting out the D-shape with snips, dremel, and sanding for smoothness (and ensuring no remnants are left behind) is advisable?

I intend to order the boot from XR's Only if I discover the restrictive one is in there...I'm heading to Baja shortly and won't have a new one in time.

Perhaps the PO left the baffles in for dust reduction, also maybe a reason he didn't do the high-flow side panel modification.

I'm thinking regular air filter change/maintenance will mitigate additional dust concerns.

Any thoughts/input are much appreciated.

The intake Boot its much cheaper if you buy it directly from Honda , i would not bother cutting the old one , as they detoriate after time anyway and start leaking so a nice new fresh rubber will serve you well for another 10 + years .

I would remove the restrictors from the intake , i does not stop the dust from coming in but it affects the air flow dramaticaly , open it up and just clean your air filter when it gets dirty , easy enough to do

I agree on buying the non restrictive boot direct from Honda, its only like $15. Check this post for boot part number and help with carb.

Turns out, the non-restrictive boot was in there already. 175/68s main/pilot is in there, so I'm hoping he did the needle change and set the clip at three.

PO just didn't remove the down-turn air box baffle for whatever reason.

So I removed it...hard to tell difference going up/down street.

We'll see how it does in Baja this week!
