New from SA

Hi All. In the process of buying a 2000 XR650R . Looking forward to years of fun on this machine. Anyone in South Africa/Stellenbosch area with advice on where to source parts and any advice on recommended mods, I am all ears.

Also, advice on what maintenance at which intervals, please do tell. I will be commuting with it if weather allows(60km round trip) and taking it touring as soon as I have it set up right.

Oh and it has only just over 9000km on the odo, which I gather is nothing for the BRP.

Actually there's a few but I know 1, in Stellenbosch. He (in)frequents here as Beserker I think, but if you want to get in touch with him PM me as I won't tell private details on here.
Mind though, no need to for that, now is the time to read all you can find.... and pluck a manual off the net! You'll need the latter, and if you ask mod Mauser nicely he'll hint with anything you may need.

You know what the starting routine is? May be a silly Q until you dropped it and the carb has flooded nudge nudge.
Or, an even more stupid Q, you know how to fill the oil? Don't say Yes if you do not, there's a trick to which will save you blowing seals (the rubber kind mind ) which I'm sure you'd like to know.
Look around bru, there's alot here right away in any case.

Commuting was the excuse to buy the bike. Thrashing it in the dirt on weekends and proper off road touring up though Nam/Botswana etc is the actual reason. Hope that sooth's your ruffled feathers .
Wanted something that is great off road and then make it tourable rather than the other way around. Most DS bikes tend to suck in the dirt.

Found a workshop manual online. I have experience with the older Honda's, the early 90's XR250, 400 and even older XL185s. Read a lot on the starting routine and was able to kick it into submission second kick in plakkies.

So what is this oil filling/seal blowing story? First I've heard/read on it?

This bike's a cracker, enjoy it already.
There's loads little things you must know however I'll give you a few basics telegram style now.
A 2000 model (up to/changed in 2002) has
- the wrong clutch bushing without internal oil grooves which must be replaced by the new/current one, pls check
- the wrong type of oilseal (changed/improves twice apparently) on the primary drive (sprocket shaft), check the number of the current one and replace if needed.
Filling this dry sump engine is done by emptying the frame first, thes also the engine (which some forget!), then pouring less-than-the-full-qty of oil into the frame (until full), then starting it, idling a bit, stop, then measure the dipstick and top off. Those doing this wrong put too much oil in and this will blow seals or oilwet the airbox.
Do not for a second consider an K&N filter (cotton gauze) but foam only, std or UNI or TwinAir.
Most definityely pull the swinger (yours is well used already) and hope that you'll be able to, and maintain/fix what you'll dinf.
Ditto stanchions, the OEM 'oil' is referred to as whalesnot and has caused internals to rust - you read that right.
The engine has 2 mesh oilstrainers, 1 in the bottom of the frame and 1 in the engine behind the clutch cover (where that bush is). Check, and if you find brass your bigend is busy greeting...

Oh, "decorking" or "uncorcked", your is already? Dual plugs removed from airfilter housing, rubber manifold between carb & head with a round hole, and diff. jets with a main of around 165?
If not, man you are going to be surprised once you've done all that!!!!!!

I did ask and apparently mine has been uncorked. I will however check, esp the jetting to make sure I am not lean/rich.

Drivetrain is currently 15/49, very nice and torquey but depending on experience I might go 15/47 just for a bit of economy. Plan is to run for a month as is and get some data and then start modifying to my taste.

Burpies why on earth would it be corked ?.....or do you mean the exhaust tip ?...rest of the bike should be stock un-restricted power....

No XRR's - read: NO! - were imported here, but for a few privately smuggled in bunches. My bunch (like probably most if not all) came from the US.... and you also know that 'us' means useless ie corked, California's spec to lame - or should that be blame?  
Trust me most were corked, and although I hunch his' is decorked (this is power hungry folk here, with wide open spaces to get lost in) he'd better check.

His exhaust is already an aftermarket-open one, so he's probably correct that it's been decorked already.

Your so wrong my best friend, his bike isn't US....it has rear brake light spring hole in pedal, mirror mounts and UK/European headlight....no un-corking required just exhaust tip.....better pictures would help

Ya right, quite like mine: pro bars, aftermarket handguards, round intake manifold, LOUD aftermarket zorst.... but main jet 115, plugs still in housing etc, an asthmatic snail

That bike its 100% uncorked , btw , what would that price be in real money like the £ ???
