Steering damper/Trail Tech mounting questions? Empty Steering damper/Trail Tech mounting questions?

(XR650R)
I'm wanting a setup that will allow me a damper and to be able to mount my new Vapor NOT using the handlebar mount method.

My concern is that neither the submount or topmount damper setups will allow this type of mounting? Anyone have pics or experience they can post? I'd like to avoid the rear post/arm mounting as it blocks access to the oil dipstick..unless someone knows of an off center rear post mount?

QUESTIONS:
Will this XRSonly submount setup allow a clean forward mounting of Vapor? It doesn't look as though it will.

Here's a GPR setup. Again doesn't look like a way to cleanly mount the Vapour forward.

Here's a Highway Dirtbikes custom setup. With this one they build in a custom top/forward mount area for the Vapor and custom work a submount. My concern again is that the rear post/arm damper mount is the only one it allows, thereby making it difficult to check oil level.

Here you go (look at it as if 3D line drawing, sorry this was a quick draw):
Orange color = Computer
Green color = Bracket you need to make

Steering damper/Trail Tech mounting questions? Empty Huh?

I have the BRP 1X complete triple clamp setup with BRP submount and Scotts damper. I got it all from Jim at BRP (one of the best machinists you'll ever meet). Accessing the fill is no problem. Or no more of a problem for my large hands than it was before. Plus, if you add an oil sight tube then you are only accessing the fill to change and add oil. Which ain't often unless you are riding a worn scoot.

Jim used to make a kit I think to mount off the horizontal pinch bolts on the tubes but what does that gain you? From the looks of your setup I reckon the triple clamp / handlebar pinch bolts are the only static mount you have available. Plus it hangs the computer out in the wind more. Trees will see you coming and reach out to grab your computer.

You can also get one of the race setups that mounts the damper down low near the fender. I can't remember if that setup requires weling onto the frame. One of them does. Here's what that looks like: http://www.scottsperformance.com/litrack/230.pdf
Here's the rest of their options: http://www.scottsperformance.com/litrack.php?LRC=3

The team used a mount welded on the very front of the frame behind the lights as I recall.

Seems like you are gonna add a lot of complexity, weight, and money to solve a slight problem. Plus your end result adds nothing to performance. The Highwaydirtbike stuff is nice. Machining is very good. But the only thing he makes I don't like is that huge triple clamp setup with switches and all. Far too big for my taste. I really like a lot of his other stuff. Very nice guy too.

My suggestion is to get and install the oil sight tube. Then replace the fill cap / dip stick with a bolt. Then just run a short extension in there with a socket to remove. Keep it simple.

Perhaps if you are running that huge Acerbis gas tank access is more limited. Ditch that thing unless you race the iditarod... It's too little gas for racing Dakar. And it's too much for nearly everything else. It ruins the extremely stable front end the BRP has.

Here's a none-too-useful picture of mine: Techmount 13

What about the XRS only top mount setup? Can it do the rearward mounted post? That way I can mount my Vapor to the front.

I really like the way he mounted up this computer. Anyone know if I can buy this bracket? Or do I have to make it my self? Looks like it's hooked to a BRP damper/clamp setup.

Let me put it another way. The big XRR is the most stable true race / dirt bike ever. No matter how much power you add that stability is there. And we BRP riders pay a price for that stability in weight and agility. So why would anyone ride with a tank so huge it degrades that BRP's heralded stability? If your rides are so long you really need that much gas I think you need a different bike. That tank is particularly a negative for new riders and riders new to the BRP. Most of the complaints I see from guys who are selling the bike because they don't enjoy riding it are from well intentioned guys who load the bike up with a lot of capacity they don't need. That includes various alloy guards, braces, racks, behemoth tanks, dry lake gearing, and the rest. It ain't the Milennium Falcon! I mean c'mon: Gene lane and his buddies race the bike nearly completely stock in long desert races and nearly always have very respectable finishes.

If you don't believe me then borrow someone's new YZ125 2-stroke for a day and see how much fun a light bike is.

Even when Robbie Bell rode the BRP all the way to Cabo he only used a 3.2 IMS.

I really like this guy's lifestyle and if I won the lottery I might consider it. But it's not the way I dream of camping - or riding:

What sort of riding are you doing? In other words, do you really need a damper? I have friends who ride a small bike (250F) and get on a BRP and wonder why in the world we'd need a damper.

It looks like Trailtech has something like what you are pursuing on their web site: http://www.trailtech.net/protectors_dashboards.html
See the 90? And the other one that could be changed?

Update: Here they are for $10: http://trailtech.net/indicator_dashboards.html

But then again you do know I do not do single tracks, right? I guess if you are doing single tracks yeah the added weight would be nuts, but then again you can also only fill the bike for what you are doing which is typically what I do. Probably if I was to get into single track riding, I would pick up a 125 or 250. Then again I also have the stock tank, can always toss that back on

Perhaps it doesn't affect you. But it was intended for the deserts of Nevada and Baja. I think even on the street that extra weight on the front end would be dangerous. Then again, what I don't know fills libraries. Steering damper/Trail Tech mounting questions? Icon_clown
