died out twice randomly

so i took my xr650r out for the first time this weekend and it ran great. she started up with ease and rode strong. but twice i was riding and it would shut off out of nowhere. i would kick it over but it wouldn't start until i did the whole flooded carburetor procedure. it wasn't that big of a deal but was curious as to what could cause this so randomly. oh and i wasn't in a situation where it would stall i was cruising in first or second at a steady pace.
