I bought a 2000 xr650r, need some quick help before i can ride it with more confidence. The bike def rides strong, but the guy i got kinda seemed like he didnt do any maintence on it.
1. What is the best place in the 48 states, that i can buy OEM parts for the best price?
2. What type of oil is the best syn/non syn? Also what weights for the hot summer I was thinking 10W-40 at least?
3. Also, any certain types of coolants that are proven more efficient, ive heard BMW blue is pretty good?
I'd appreciate any other tips, and yes I know how to use search Help a noob out Icon_biggrin

http://www.hdlparts.com

or try

www.servicehonda.com

Coolant: I run Evans NPG+. This doesn't boil or put pressure on the hoses. The Evans NPG-R may freeze in winter in cold climates.

ronayers.com is trustworthy, I get all my OEM parts from them.

As for Oil I use Rotella, if I can find the synthetic I prefer it...but it is hard to find around me so lately I been using the normal white bottle stuff.

As for Coolant I used Prestone from the auto parts store. You should change the coolant from time to time anyways. Most people fail to do this.

Also service your swing arm pivot bolt, mine was seized up. I wish you luck on this. If it does come out pretty easy lube it up real good and slide it back together. You might even want to change the swing arm bearings while you messing with it....then you know you should be good for sometime.

Change your fork oil and other bits that wear in the forks. Change the fork seals, so you know you will be good for sometime. (I still need to do this myself)

Adjust valves, change spark plug, clean/change air filter...and your good to go.

The chain adjustment bolts are notorious for rusting and seizing in the swing arm. Every time I change my rear tire I remove the bolts, clean and put on new coat of anti seize. Might save a head ache in the future.

Help a noob out Empty This is getting frustrating

How many times do we have to answer the same questions? It's not Kashmir's fault because the search doesn't work properly and when long smart docs are written they disappear into the hole of old posts.

Here's my $.02
The best place to buy parts is from Precision Concepts. They aren't the cheapest. But once you establish a relationship there you have access to the very best database of XR650R knowledge anywhere, period.
Use Honda Oil. The reasons are many.
The only coolant to use is Evans NPG-R or NPG+. End of heating problems forever.
I hope that helps!
