Hew,

I'm really, like in utterly, disappointed now!
Golden opportunities like this only present themselves once, and this was your chance - was, mind.
Gone now pal, really, opportunity only knocks once.
You could have asked some questions, and ask them 1 by 1 of course, with Mauser reporting back every time.
"Did you check if there's enough coolant?" would have been the perfect opener.
"That sounds like there's not enough oil in there!" followed by "..which reminds me when I was in XYZ-moor and my bike did abc..." just for coming across convincingly.
Then a "Then it must be the ignition. Did you check with a strobelight?" followed by "Come on now, surely you already tried a new sparkplug?"
Darn, this could have been soooooo funny.....

Mauser, it did cross my mind to do something like this myself, but I decided not to because you're a decent bloke. Hew's right, it's normal. Keep in mind that this is a thumper, the cranckspeed varying an awful lot more then with an inline-4, and the noise-differential is caused by this.
Ya right, now call me all kind of ugly things lol!

lol would never call you nothing nasty Burp banana anyway I changed the cooland few months back and the oil so nice try lol, as mentioned never really sure what a bike should sound like. Buying the bike as a import and with unknown mileage etc you never 100% sure what your buying.
Had some good feeling about its past life, like the bike being still restricted when I got her and the rear pads being the original Nissin's all the bolts look like they have not been removed and messed with and little yellow dots on them showing they have / had been checked at some stage.
I will sleep easy tonight razz knowing my baby is all good....did I mention my frame guards ?....

sounds good to me also but when you bolt on that alu skidplate right against the frame you can have a totally different sound comming up so i put some old inner bicycle tubes between the plate and the frame so it stays nice quiet like oem. naughty

Good idea, I do have 2 tap washers under the front fixing bolts and have added foam tap to the frame clamp just not to 2 bolts underneath..... Very Happy

I had my guard on the inside urethane-spray lined, very thin, same stuff as sprayed onto loadbodies.
Works fine whilst fuel/oil will not affect it.

a lot of bikes have engines that become quieter when when pulling on the clutch lever.you do realise that the engine casing in your vid is the stator cover?

my clutch is very noisy when starting from cold.it has also developed some strange chattering noise off road.i think this is the culprit.or rather these;

there are rubbers around the studs fixing the gear to the basket,at least i believe they are rubbers.put there by honda to give a modicum of "cush" to the transmission.they have become slack and i can move the basket back and forth while holding the gear still.i hope this is causing my "issues" and an aftermarket basket will be the cure. scratch

Ponty,

yip, they're cush blocks - which, with a Hinson basket for instance, you will have to swap over.
I think they're not for sale 'loose', so if they've got play you're fooked a bit - find a basket with decent, or 'playless', rubbers first is what I'd do.

much more important - is that the clutch bushing I see there?
I think it is..... which means you need to buy ASAP the updated different-looking-on-the-inside bush!!!!
That thing is a problem waiting to happen, and could cost you the shaft if not caught in time.
Off you go then, to buy the new one.
Oh, from 2000 to 2002 they have them, and yours sits smack bang in the middle there.

Mind, that could well be all problem you have/hear. File the basket's fingers' sides (there where they show indentations) flat a bit and it's good to go again.

Yes but I was trying to show you where the noise seems to come from in relationship to the clutch lever being pulled in Smile I think I would have spotted the clutch plates when I changed my stator over if they had been on that side lol.

sorry mate, wasn't casting aspersions.i can see that you wanted punters to see the clutch actuating arm moving but just checking that you knew.believe me,wouldn't be the first person i've met who thought that was the clutch casing.

hi burp.yes, changed clutch bushing(it had the old one) as soon as i thought i had a problem.the marks on the outer basket are not as bad as they appear in the picture, honestly.they feel quite smooth running a finger along there but will do a little remedial work there as you suggest.

been offered a hinson with the gear already bolted to it so going that route.thanks. cheers

No problem.. I know what you mean...take Burp for example it took me 3 weeks to explain to him that the 650R was a four stroke bike and not 2 stroke...he kept posting about not being about to top up the 2 stroke oil banana
