Noob in Colorado
Hello all you BRP riders,
I went and rode it, I loved it(sorry dear), I went back a week later and bought it.
I brought it home in a spring snow storm gaining 3,000 ft of elevation.
It stayed in the back of the truck overnight, temp going down to 22 degrees.
Can't start it.
Have spark, new plug, cleaned the carb, still nothing.
Going a little crazy, have manual, still don't know what to do next.
Honda's are supposed to be easy,
I know i am missing something simple, any idea's would be greatly valued.
I need this bike to run for sanity!
Thanks, BV

BV,
this new2you Honda is a bit of an odd one, it is one of the reasons why it is so loved by a small & not2clever handful (us!). Starting the bastid requires you to go to gym, practice your leg until you can kick a truck, and even then it firing up is no given..... so, do like most of us do, and learn how to start it!
Yip, no joke, there's a trick to it - ditto for filling the oil, you won't be the first or last chap to blow a seal, and note I'm not talking about that old blonde joke here
But also, find out what you bought first! Huh? Yeah: what carb is on there, std or a pumper, and if the latter which one? Search this forum & others, google for 'correct starting procedure XR650X' and you'll find loadsa info you need to know.... simply because as said this is a bit of an odd one.
Bottom line is though, your bike will start with a pussyfoot dressed in a flipflip, nigh on failsafe every time!!

Disclaimer: "bike will start with a pussyfoot dressed in a flipflip"
This is only valid - or should I say safe? - IF the std camshaft is in there, with a properly working auto-decomp system!
Note that a genuine HRC-cam (a chickentooth, rare as Dodo's!) also has this mechanism which prevents a backfiring slug to break your foot/ankle/leg.... no jokes here at all!
This bike fires at TDC when it is started, another reason why backfiring/kicking-back is not really heard of, however do note that it is not impossible! With any aftermarket camshaft no auto-decomp system is present, and if it kicks back then only your foot/ankle/leg stops it - which will hurt, a lot, trust me at least for that...
So, do as I do, always wear offroad boots when you kick the thing

Can't start the dream
Thanks for the replies,
Intially the plug was wet.
Carb was spilling fuel from overflow.
Changed to new plug, removed carb stripped it down cleaned it and checked the float.
Bike is a 2005, uncorked, power up kit installed by Honda dealer
Stock carb PE78A. Main jet 180, slow jet 68 jet needle 3rd from top.
Manual decompressor.
Trying the standard starting procedure that is all over the net.
Check the valves next?
She ran like a raped ape when I test drove her.
Guy I bought from not a crook.
All replies appreciated!

One more thing, Is the throttle stop screw what you guys are calling the tickover?
I can't find much info on where to set it for starting.
The fellow I bought the bike from would open it for starting and then reset once the bike was warm. Any ideas where it should be set for starting?
Thanks
