Need CDI?

Need CDI?
Hello, I am new to the forum and have a 2000 xr650 with abouy 5500 miles. As I was trying to get it running after sitting for about a year, I accidentally attached the jumper cables wrong for a moment. Since then I cannot get it to start. I pulled the plug and watched the spark....it seems to only spark the instant I hit the start button and the instant I release the start button....so, do you think I damaged the CDI or is it a resistance issue somewhere? The plug seems good. I have not completely researched the issue but have heard some about the ground under the seat and CDI solder issues??? I want to sell the bike and need to get it running. Thanks for any advice.

more info
Oh, I did not mean to imply that the bike started before the jump attempt....I do not know if the plug was sparking correctly before the jump attempt because the battery was bad and actually removed, I was using the jumper cables from a running vehicle as the only voltage source.

This L syndrome is spreading over here like a cancer
Someone needs to put stop to this
As for you my friend you probably need new battery and possibly other bits depending on how much damage have you done to the electrical parts , so yes possibly the CDI too

do have new battery
Well, I do have a new battery and as I watch the spark plug, grounded against the case, and crank the engine I see a good spark as I push start button but not another one until I let go. I also had removed handlebars, with kill/start switch, to straighten them from a previous owners drop. I did notice it would crank in off also, thought maybe I got the wires reconnected backwards to the kill switch but it worked ok after a few tries. I hate electrical problems...maybe I should put my Lister diesel engine on it,...no electrical at all, just weighs about 800# and is bigger than the bike and ...only has 6 Hp.

Dont want it anymore
It was just fine till I messed with it to get it started to sell...I ride a 2003 VTX 1800C with 81k miles on it, so this is just a toy...

Re: Need CDI?
Mauser, I put the battery back where the old one went, in the battery box...? Next to the CDI and solenoid...btw, the solenoid has a compt for a 20a fuse, and it is labeled...but no fuse is in there...I did blow a 20a fuse during the jump fiasco but it was in the fuse holder with the other fuses....?

Re: Need CDI?
Well, I just did the same after checking another forum, checked to see if it matters whether the kickstand is down or up...you probably don't have that either eh? What is up on the far side of the atlantic? Anyway, where is the pulse generator? I hate to just buy parts to check it out but after blowing a fuse with jumper cables on wrong, who knows???Mauser wrote:peaceodarock wrote:Mauser, I put the battery back where the old one went, in the battery box...? Re: Need CDI?
dude you have a XR650L and this is forum for XR650R's - very different beasts, we kick our pigs to get em to run
if you check out this thread then you will find links to better advice for your bike.....
hope you get it fixed and it doesn't cost too much. It stinks to spend money on something your trying to sell!!! I feel your pain.
What do you plan to get next?
Cheers

Here's our highly advanced wiring diagram.....some of the other guys do have the more complicated versions but as you can see no battery

Re: Need CDI?
good one! Sorry, did not realize the difference in the r and l. Right now I wish I had no battery or cdi, or pulse generator, or diodes, or any electron carrying conductors!!! Grrr! Thanks for the help anyway.

Tsk tsk tsk Mark, can't jump anymore eh?
I'll take yer bike off yer hands then, if it's in a reasonable condition still that is, and clean but dirtcheap of course
