Oil changes
Hey guys
When do you change your oil?
How short is the skirt on the XR piston compared to the race bikes? I'd like to think there is less blow by and that the oil lasts
much longer than say a WR450.
The manual says every 1000km. but is that under race conditions? I dont like changing oil so try to extend it as much as i can.
so much so that i'd consider adding more oil capacity via a reservoir somehow..

Re: Oil changes
My R is plated and spends a fair amount of time on the pavement. I change the oil about every 900-1000 miles (1450-1600km).ADVJake wrote:Hey guys

Re: Oil changes
Every 300 miles is mandatory in my dry climate (dust) pumice and high silicate dust to boot. I don not change mid trip so if the trip is 600m then the oil gets changed at 600m. Hope theis helps.

I suppose an external tank could be added.ADVJake wrote:Hmm i was afraid of that... thats about 1000 KM.

Oil Change.
Yes, you can custom fab an oil tank to fit between the frame and skid plate, but why?ADVJake wrote:Hmm i was afraid of that... thats about 1000 KM.

If you change your oil when it starts to turn from gold to brown then you are doing the motor a favor.
Now when is that? It depends on your terrain and pace.
I ride with guys that use the R for prerunning and everything else and they get 15,000-20,000 miles out of a cylinder before it is torn down for a top end only.
Bottom line is if you keep the oil fresh then the rings and valve guides will last a long time. If not they will wear prematurly and force a teardown.
The other key is to keep the air filter fresh. One of the great things about the R is the filter is flat. That means it doesn't take up alot of room in a backpack or panniers! Also use No Toil so you can clean a filter at night and re-oil in the AM then you will never have to carry a spare filter on long rides.
Also if you cut out the left side number plate and DO NOT have hot cam in the bike, BIG MISTAKE. All you will do is transfer dirt to the filter faster.
