clutch cable??? Empty clutch cable???

Post  Guest Thu Jan 13, 2011 1:18 am

hi guys
i am new to this forum, first time i am posting.
I live in Australia ( born in germany). Always had dirt bikes in my live.
Last year i bought a xr 650 r of a friend which so far is prob the best dirtbike i had.
two weeks ago i fitted a new clutch cable, no problems installing it. since than i drove maybe 50 km, all city driving ( sort of rough driving, i call it 'fun driving')no problems.

yesterday on the way back from work, suddenly the cable' stretched', at least thats how it felt. after pushing it/putting it into gear i drove home safely.
by taking spare parts from my pushbike, i placed some washers in between lever and cable to'shorten the cable", which worked fine for a few kilometers - and it 'Stretched" again.
Now, i dont really think that a braided steel cable can stretch, it would just snap.

Can it be something else? in side the clutch? the fork which goes into the engine moves maybe 0.5 cm left to right ( i guess thats normal)i looked at some workshop manuals and nothing and nothing came to my attention.

can someone stear me in the right direction?
hard to explain the whole problem especially if english is not my nstive language.

every attempt of help is mostly appreciated

Sounds like the cable end may not be in correctly, have you had a chance to look at it again? Has to be something simple.

clutch cable??? Empty cluch problem solved

Post  Guest Thu Jan 13, 2011 6:26 am

ok.
i found out what was wrong.
i was thinking: if i dont believe a 8threated , braided steal cable can stretch that much and i believe in the job i did. what can make it longer?
solution: if the outer (constatine-sort-sort-of-spring) gets somehow shorter it would 'longer" the inside clutch cable.
Once i took the clutch cable out, i made an incision of the outer casing, i was able to see that the casing somehow shrunk.
the moral of the story: buy oem parts...

i know its hard to understand- but if you know what i mean, thanks for reading and thanks for giving me moral support.
i already miss my bike, every minute not on it is wasted.

Yo Emperor (Kaiser),

ein bisschen ol dabei wird auch gar nicht slecht sein, du weisst doch das neue kabel gar nicht geolt sind?
Excuse the lack of umlaute usw, but new cables tend to lack lubrication entirely or at least insufficiently. Lube the thing, with some sillicon/teflon oil or why, but put some lube in. Also grease the hingepin-part in the lever-assy, and repeat whenever you have high-pressure sprayed/cleaned the thing.
Sure, rubbish cables will surely exist, but this one you've got already - add some lube?
