Headlight Problems Empty Headlight Problems

Post  Mauser Thu Jul 14, 2011 7:09 pm

Hi guys, the bike passed it's MOT today but I struggled with the tester to get the headlight beam correct.
Now my bike has a stock standard headlight same as the XR250R & XR400R...headlight was right way up, new bulb and wired correcty....only 3 wires green blue and white.
Anyways to cut a long story short the only way we could get it through the test was to turn the headlight upside down....bulb has differnent size tabs on so will only go in 1 way. Cannot for the life of me work out why, the bulb holder locates into the headlight with a single tab, so that cannot go in wrong ?.
I don't think they make a headlight buld SE12V 35/35 watt S2E19 2V2 with the location pins reversed so what is going wrong ?.
Looking at the bulb you can see the dipped beam is pointing upwards and the small plate which is supposed to cut the light beam to stop it dazzling others is below the filament not above ?.
Anyone have any thoughts before I file the tab so the bulb can be reversed ?.

OK,

let me ask a thick question: your 'upside-down', has that the lettering on the lens upside-down too?
Also, how about the aiming screw-tab, that won't work then anymore will it?
I ask because I've got 2 units here, OEM & aftermarket (both not on-road). Dunno the one you have (a roadworthy one I'd presume).
Mind though, are you sure that the globe itself is the correct one, I mean the correct one for the headlight, not a "more/better light" thing? Some higher-wattage globes do not have the filaments in the same location, that's why I ask.
Still, funny problem. I'd have told the guy to turn his measuring-thing upside-down razz

Hi Burp,
Totally stock headlight, side light bottom left corner when sitting on the bike, the writting on the lens is the right way up. I can only presume that either...
A. They do 2 types of globe bulbs and I have the wrong type.
B. The bulb holder itself is incorrect, which I doubt as it fits perfect along with the spring retainer and rubber boot.
I have altered the bulb so it will fit in either way and all is good with the lights, wires are all correct colours and the main beam lamp comes on when the main is turned on....as it should.
Bit weird and I hate things not being perfect Smile there again the bulb should last ages and only took a few minutes to alter.

Doh...bulb has failed today well I noticed it wasn't working today...
Going back to my original problem here is my bulb.....

Headlight Problems Bulb

If anyone has 1 lying about and can check the size of the tab sticking out against my bulb it would be appreciated....my small tab is showing on the picture and you can see the dipped beam has blown.

Here is the holder which can only go in 1 way...?.

Headlight Problems Holder

So for the dipped beam to shine downwards the smallest bulb tab needs to be at the bottom not the top as my bulb holder is ?, confusing as either the bulb is wrong which means all the ones I am looking at are wrong or the bulb holder isn't the stock 1 for this lens ?.
