problems with bike
ok bought an 2000 xr650r about month ago. i bought it out of state so that didnt give me much time to look it over. from what the owner said it has a hotcam that i think is stage 2, hight compression pistion, full fmf system, uncorked, and a airbox mod.
the guy fired it up in one kick but there was no way that it was cold. when i got it home i couldnt get it started to save my life. the only way i could get it started was by drift starting it. i figured it had somthing to do with the carb. so i took it off cleaned the hell out of it. from reading on the internet i put a 180 main, 68s pilot, B53E needle, and removed the flap on the choke. my elevation is 800. im sure the float hight is right. i did all this and it ran great. fired up after 2nd kick. next day is when the problems happened. i hooked up a tach and was going to adjust my pilot screw. it ran good for about 8 mins while i was adjusting then it stared back firing and died.
i have no idea, could it be the pilot? when i was adjusting it the rpms didnt seem to change when i screwed in and out the pilot screw. mabe an 100 rpm difference. i also got an 182 main that i might try. also thinking mabe there was dirt in the tank but not postive. just weried to me that it ran fine for awhile then started to back fire.
any help is greatly appreicated.
thanks

Re: problems with bike
Yo Brock,
first thing you need to do is set the valves, this bike's a bit finicky when it comes to that.
Also, you wouldn't be the first one to have dirt in your tank, so flush that, re-clean the carb & mount an inline filter. Also, a plug's cheap - start with a new one?
Cheers!

Re: problems with bike
hi BuRP,
i going to set the valves today and clean the tank. how do you put an inline filter on such a short fuel line? could i use a longe fuel line?
i tried a new plug but no defference. should i use a hotter plug for the mods that are done on my bike?
thank,
brock

Re: problems with bike
Is fuel getting to the carb?
Is the fuel strainer blocked or collapsed?
Do you have adequate spark?
Go to page 318 in the manual:
