IMS 7 Galon Tank

I have just installed the IMS BIG BOY to the XR and it hasn't hindered its handelling as much as I thought it would. (notice the weight when full though, and when half full it sloshes around a bit). The problem I have is that on both sides at the lowest parts of the tank the edges are only around 2cm from the headers. Bit worried about it getting to hot. Any Ideas?????
Also does anyone know what that foam or steel wool type stuff is called that you put in your tank to absorb some of the weight transfer of so much fuel?

Yeah, that stuff's called tank foam - quite costly though.
I bought mine (blue, fwiw) from merlinmotorsport in the UK, quite a bit more affordable. And, it makes for a very noticeable difference (in same tank so btw), easy to explain but "feeling" the difference is way more impressive than I thought would be the case. The bike's more 'solid' now, more predictable, it does now move 'normal', a bit (though different) like a very small nimble bike like my crf230 - but that's got a tiny tank anyway.
Can recommend it to anyone.

You also may want to find aluminium-foil tape, the self-adhesive stuff, and stick it on the tank there where you fear for melting-through.
3M makes this but others (Tesa) do too. Know that this stuff comes off or becomes loose (no stickers hold on these tanks) so buy a full roll and replace then when it becomes necessary. I've got it too, better safe than sorry.

The blocks are quite large, and will compress quite a lot too. I did not do what one finds recommended, stuffing them in & compressing them hard, but rather watched/looked and placed them such that they are sitting against each other without overly compressing them. This way you will need quite a bit less of them whilst they do exactly the same.
Obviously any manufacturer will not like this as they consequentially will sell less of them, but it works very well.
Another thing is to start with mounting an in-line fuel filter. I don't care whatever whoever says but the cutting of these blocks does create fine dust/cuttings/shavings/debris, whatever name you'll give to it, and this WILL end up in your tank, no matter how well they try to clean them before packaging.

Thanks for that, I run the FMF system on the beast. Have you had any problems with the heat from the headers after using foil tape? Im not worried for the longer trips, its the small single track stuff I still attempt. (Mostly first gear stuff, no airflow)

Nope but mind my clearance-distances seem more than yours, you mentioned ~2cm.
You'll take the tanker off often enough (cleaning), so keep a check on the tape still sticking.
