Yet another new member ...

I've joined b/c I'm seriously looking at a 2001 XR650R. It's certainly not that I need another 2-wheeled toy, but I don't have any kind of dual-sport capable ride now. In my 37yrs of riding, the time I've spent in the dirt, or on trails, can be counted in hours. This particular XR appeals to me b/c I want a dual-sport and I know the guys who've maintained this bike and know it's history.

So, the details. The price is high for an '01, $4500. But, she's street legal and tagged already. Apparently that's a considerable amount of hassle (in north AL) that I wouldn't have to deal with. She has very low use on her (I don't have pix but she looks like she hasn't been beat up). She has a full TI exhaust upgrade(?). She's got an Edelbrock carb in place of the stock Honda unit. She's got some trick 17" black (w/gold lettering) wheels/street rubber, I can't remember the brand. She has a 'one-finger' Brembo front brake system (oversize rotor). And she's got an over-sized gas tank. I know that the stock rims and tank will come with. Other stock pcs, e.g. the carb and front brake parts may come with too. She'll do an honest 120mph, tested at the track by guys I trust.

My hope would be to use her for street (commute), for track days (minimal, in 'motard' trim), and playing on trails/back country gravel roads, or no roads. If the zombie apocalypse ever happens, she might be a bug-out vehicle too . What do you experienced XR owners think? Can I get some opinions on this?

When are you picking it up?

The present owner has agreed to let me purchase on 'lay away', so I won't actually get her from the shop she's in for about 6 weeks. Suits me ok, I have to make room in the garage for her. I've got a track bike, a sport tourer, a non-running semi-classic, and a total basket case in there already ...

wow that's my old bike, I crashed that out riding in the woods nearly 12 months ago and cracked the main frame....guy at shop said it was scrap and gave me $1200 for the bike cannot believe they fixed it up and are re-selling it
Mind you I wouldn't ride her again if you had seen the state it was in......

Your ex-bike (you in UK) and sold now in the US, and you think it the same - whilst it looks totally different expect for being 'a' XRR?

Got any history on it? Both radiators missing, a bit funny - and it can't be that cold there?

Ahhh but it don't need radiators as it's cold here so that saves me a few Kilo's in weight....the air temp is -15 so over heating isn't an issue

That is one desolate looking pic, the guys here did one helluva job fixing 'your' bike back up for me to buy ...

Talon hubs on Excel rims.

The are a lot of goodies on the bike plus the original parts.

Just the motard wheel setup would set you back, used mind you, $1000 to $1500.

All said and done it is a fair price.

Any suspension work?

Thanx ... I'd have to ask the guys at the shop about the suspension. I'm to be the 3rd owner, and the bike has very low hours on it which helps make the price a good one . One of the partners at the shop was the 1st owner, and the guy who 'built' this bike. He's also a flat track racer and I am confident that he knows what he's doing. But I didn't ask about suspension work. I'm told that the XR650 motors are 'bullet-proof' when compared to the XR450 motors, I hope so ...

Made my 2nd of 3 payments yesterday for my new 'baby' ... also got a lesson in how to kick start her, apparently you don't just jump on the kick starter like I used to do with my BSA and Norton (a loooonnngg time ago), there's a process ...

And it's so easy to do you can infact kick start a 650R in bare feet......look on youtube

The bike looks good
