Sorry to sound rude but you have brought an "L" model 650.....this is the 650R model forum.

The 2 bikes are light years apart, totally different frame and engine, about the only part which might be the same is the front wheel Bump

650R....

The reason for the lower price is that it has an engine noise. At idle it has a rattle in the motor. Off idle it goes away. I took the valve cover off with motor still in bike so I only had limited room to inspect, but I have checked that the oil is pumping into the valves, the valve adustments are ok and it appears that the rocker arms are smooth and the timing chain tensioner is good. Any experience with these types of sounds?

So from here I am planning on tearing it down and rebuilding. Crank bearing, rod / rod bearings, piston kit, hone or bore, timing chain, clean and polish head, valve seals / springs / valves and reasemble.
Where do you suggest getting parts for the best price?

Thanks for any help.

Cameron

If the noise goes away when the engine is revved I don't think it is anything serious.
Using a long screwdriver put the blade against various parts of the engine and the handle against your ear you should be able to pin point the area where the noise is coming from.
The clutch makes a rattling noise on many bikes and that tends to go away when you pull the clutch lever in or rev the bike.
The type of engine rebuild you are looking at would be very expensive and if there is nothing wrong then a waste as well.
If it was my bike and the noise went as I revved it I would just ride it. If the noise increased with revs I would stop until I had established the cause.
Good luck and keep your eye out for a XRR they are a bit special. Wink

Well now, I just bought a Garelli Junior Cross 50 thumper, and it also has a funny sound when it runs. It goes something like "ringdinggdinggring.." and it smokes a lot.
Anybody know what I should do?

Cam510, you should check the camchain tensioner, at 20Kmi this is probably what is bothering you.
Now, back to that Garelli....
