Finally bought my 00 BRP
Yesterday I finally drove the 4 hour round trip to pick up my new to me 2000 xr650r. When I bought the bike I did so knowing the previous owner had installed a pro circuit t4 slip on and that it was barfing fuel out of the overflow just heard the bike run when meeting the previous owner in a parking lot. When I got it back home I could not resist and had to ride it around my yard a lap or two. After having difficulty starting it and keeping it running with my throttle I rode the bike, I noticed a lot of backfiring and its in ability to idle. I also found out the hard way the rear tire being half worn down would not grab enough traction for me to truly get an idea of how much power it could produce. After another hour I had the tank off and the carb removed and disassembled to address the overflowing reported by the previous owner and what seemed to be a lean condition while riding it. I found dirt in the bowl and around the needle seat I am assuming this was the overflow problem and plan on buying some brake clean and swabs today to correct it. I found it had a 160 main jet and a 65 pilot. I also found that it still had the restricted intake boot and restricted in the air box. I am purchasing an uncork kit from eBay today. My question to you guys that are familiar with jetting the BRP, will the 175 and 68 jets that come with the uncork kit be correct for the added slip on exhaust as well? I wanted to get it right before putting it back together and riding it.

Should be yeah, but also make sure that the 2 (two!) plastic plugs are removed from the airbox (top-right seen from the side).
Have fun, you're going to love the power

Jetting
Each bike is a little different. Do a search on the form for the jetting guide.
When you buy jets get real Kehien parts!!!!!!!! No loose tolarance cheap parts!!!!!!!
Get a carb kit! The float needle valve usually only last one maybe two years.
Set the proper float height of 16mm

Re: Finally bought my 00 BRP
Well I installed my uncork kit and rear tire yesterday, all went as planned except I could not find where to route the overflow tube that is on the left hand side of the carb when you are sitting on the bike. It appears in the manual that it is routed up towards the gas tank but when I disassembled it I did not catch where it was originally routed. I was hoping someone on here would know its proper location. With the overflow tube just hanging there I turned my fuel on. Me cleaning the needle and seat worked it did not spew out the overflow, hopefully it will last if not i will take your advice and change the needly and seat. A couple of kicks and the bike fired right up the idle was a bit low so I turned it up just a shade. Even though it was dark outside I took it a few laps around my yard, the uncork kit made an unbelievable difference power wise and the bike ran smooth, no coughing backfiring or flat spots. I think that was the best 70 dollars I have ever spent. I have a ride planned tomorrow with a bunch of freinds, can't wait to get some miles on it. On a different note I should have went with a larger rear tire the 120/90-18 Michelin s-12 tire looks a bit narrow hopefully the bike will Handel well with this tire?

Re: Finally bought my 00 BRP
Tube runs up the left side of the frame and hooks through the rubber cover which sits around the frame....if that makes sense ?.

Yes make sense to me, I will pull the tank back off and rerun it properly. I had a chance just before the sun set today and put one mile on it, this thing is ridiculous fast!

Here is a link to the EBay auction, they are a honda dealer and you get original honda parts:

It is relatively easy to install just need a clean workbench to keep the small parts organized when disassembling the carb. I found this link using the search on this site this guy did an excellent job of documenting and communicating the whole process, I had it pulled up on my IPhone and referenced often during my tear down and re-assembly. It is remarkable how much power and throttle response is gained after doing this upgrade. Note my bike had an aftermarket exhaust on it so I did not have to modify my stock muffler. I think the stocker has to be drilled out to get it to flow.

Re: Finally bought my 00 BRP
l need to remove my carb not sure if my bike had this mod done yet but will if not already installed , l have a desent after market tuned pipe and also different matched tuned muffler . The power of this bike l have is more then l'm use too compaired to the three xr 500 l currently have . A different animal for sure, torque monster for sure . Winter in my area has arrived so over the winter l will collect info about these bikes and will perform some of the improvements to make my bike reliable and a little more powerful . Not that isn't powerful enough . Forums like this help us keep our bikes in proper shape ??!!
