Re: XR No 5
Well the engine has finally come apart and gearbox has been replaced along with the clutch basket and a new clutch fitted (no pics of that). Good news is the bottom end was strong, but part of an o-ring was blocking an oilway to the top end so the cam and rockers are worn out. Need to source a cam and rockers now may go stage 1 not sure yet.
While its been away I have done a few small jobs but progress is really slow...
FCR carb with nos adapter for XR airbox
XRS only aorbox mod
New wide foot pegs fitted
And I did manage to get the plate for my swingarm made by my handy mate..
Also made me stainless spacers etc to fit my supermoto wheels to the crf forks.

Have you blocked the original intake holes after installing the XR's only air filter cover mod or left them open ?

Left everything open, will set up the carb once its all back together again.

Which pegs are those? Powder coating looks shweeeet. Not ideal, but I am waiting until something bad happens before I take the bike apart and rebuild ( an black out anything that can be coated ). Are the tank and plastics staying red?

Re: XR No 5
They look like the IMS pegs but i am not sure , B45her should be around soon to tell you .

"blocked the original intake holes"
Now, Madder, who does that if I may ask?
Thick gullible dickhead here, excuse my rather stupid question.............. or is it?
Who in his right mind ever does that?
45, don't, thick as a brick is an album by Jethro Tull, leave it at that

Re: XR No 5
The reason i have asked is because some people did that ( blocked the original top two holes ) and i have read some contradicting informations about this matter , and as i am considering this mod i am trying to find as much information as possible . It seems that if you open it too much you will lose some torque at the bottom .
So does this make me thick ?
Make your own judgement .

" if you open it too much you will lose some torque at the bottom "
No offense Maddy, but.... oh hell, do take offense, you're nuts
That's nonsense from the top shelf bru, the more air (with the correct fuel of corse) the more torque/power, in fact you can't ever have too much!!
Opening the sidepanel but blocking the original intake is just diverting the flow, but you want more... hence the opened sidepanel!
Some say you loose some bottom grunt when you mount bigger diameter headers, and this may be true depending on what one does - but don't believe in this myself, I've got XRsOnly SS headers.
But air, no way Jose, you want as much as you can get.
But.... a bit more dust on the filter's outside one must expect with an opened panel, but this is logical also. No prob for a streetfighter though, and also not for a dirty pig as long as you maintain (clean) the filter.

Re: XR No 5
MSR foot pegs by the way..
I'm no expert on the matter but I always thought more air and more fuel = more power. Thought it may be a good mod as I have a pumper carb. Will see eventually I guess.

Oh and yes plastics are staying red, maybe try and source a bigger tank eventually but don't mind if that's a clear one or red.
Tried changing plastics etc on previous xr's but don't want to do that with this one.. I like the way they look, saying that may put a crf headlight on it.

I have not passed any of my personal opinions on the subject just stated what i have read and was told , ( people from XR's only for example ) , its not as simple as some think .
As far as i know you can open it as much as you like , even run without the cover and filter but there are some limitations
1 - what vacuum can your engine produce
2 - The diameter of the intake / carburettor
Yes you can jet it up for more air but there is a wall , and the only way to overcome it is forced induction .

Does a CRF front rim fit on with spacers and different bearings or is it a CRF rim with oem hub spoked up?

I have a crf front end conversion so bolts right up.

std airbox
i found that the std airbox was adequate for stage 1 upgrade if you opened sidepanel as well, it was limiting the airflow once i got to stage 3 setup, i.e with a fcr40mx carb i was up to 195-205 main jet, once i made the hi flow airbox the jetting reduced to 175 main jet on bored out 43.5 fcr-mx, and yes you can affect low-mid range power by messing up the std airbox, depending on what you do with it, the std air intakes are for std mtr, they do not flow enough air once you start increasing cam/ carb, exhaust systems require to be matched to other eng mods to give a good power delivery," horses for courses" as the saying goesMad Frosty wrote:I have not passed any of my personal opinions on the subject just stated what i have read and was told , ( people from XR's only for example ) , its not as simple as some think .

Engine is nearly done and should have it back in a week or so. Had my triple clamps and off road wheels done black too and bought some bars and clamps for it.
I got bored then and bolted up wheels etc for a look. I need the wheels building if anyone has a contact.
What's the best thing to flush the frame and oil pipes before I put it all back together?
