Changing from Edelbrock to TM40 Empty Changing from Edelbrock to TM40

I will be throwing out the Edelbrock and purchasing a TM40 soon and have a couple of questions.

Will the extra long throttle cables from the Edelbrock fit the TM40? I have tall risers.

Is this a good buy or should I purchase elsewhere, $ is tight at the mo.

This is what the ebay TM40 kit comes with.

main jets 150, 147.5, 142.5, 140
pilot jets 22.5, 25
air jet is plugged.

Should the air jet be plugged?

Duf,

No, the airjet definitely should not be plugged - in fact it should be a 1.1 or 1.2 if memory serves me well. Nice to see you get a few jets with it though, so better ask if the airjet (a loose changeable screw-in thingy) can be replaced with a normal holed/open one.
Use the 25 idlejet in any case, plus play around with the airjet to see what idles best. Oh, you tune the carb fully withOUT the pumper rod in, you did know?

Cheers Burp, I did know about disabling the AP thanks to this forum! How's it goin in your neck of the woods? It's 15yrs since I visited Pretoria, wow how time fly's. I was in Wellington in 2005 as my sister married a saffa and moved over, crazy woman!! I very much enjoyed both trips to SA and will take my kids over in 2019 when they big enough to remember it, and include a trip to the Okavango. Lots of saffa's round here, NZ is certainly a popular destination for those leaving SA.

I'm still playing email tag with the seller to see what else they can supply but they are slow to reply.

Bike will run at sea level and 16-25C, it has XR's only full system and opened up airbox. I'll aim to have the following jets in my grubby hands before I even start messing with it.

Jet Needle 9DJY4
Needle Jet Y6
Main Jet 137.5, 140, 142.5, 145, 147.5
Pilot Jet 22.5, 25, 27.5
Air Jet 1.1, 1.2

Any suggestions of what else I should have on hand would be much appreciated.

SA's changed and continues to do so, at a surprising pace actually. Not all for the better but hey, who am I hmm? BRP smile I've seen the saffas clinging together there, hate to see it actually, they still yearn for their boerland I guess. I'm an import here and love it, will never move - and am almost a boer now Bump

The IJ25 is all you'll need - unless you want to physically convince yourself of the same I did. Your 145 main is a good starter (my bike's similar to yours), maybe a 147.5. I still have to dyno to get the main 'purrfect' but am happy for now. Do put an inline filter in though, I've seen my headers glowing red already during idling due to fine crap in the idle system.
Keep us informed with respect to your setup please, handy for all and good to know. You'll not regret this carb, I think it's the better choice for it is simplicity itself whilst delivering the kick of the pump, and power's always enough.

TM40 turned up a couple of days ago along with some extra jets. Looks puuurdy. Got some wiring to replace and tidy up as the previous owner has made a mess of it so let the games begin!!

I have just set the carby up with following setting.

Float level      20.8
Air Jet             1.2
Pilot Jet         25
Main Jet        145
Needle Jet      Y6
Needle          9DJY4-96   Middle clip with spacer in.

What is the best way to stop the pump from operating for tuning?
Adjust it out
Remove rod
Remove plunger
Something else?

Remhoof jou Kiwi!! BRP smile

If you fiddle a bit (can't remember, Altheimers and booze - or was it recreational alcohol?) the rod can be removed - and no, the lot still seals then.
But, do fiddle indeed before you chuck it on, you'll see that both the start as well as stop of the pumping action can be adjusted. Oh, and do aim the PJ so that it squirts on the jetneedle.... and then take the rod out & mount it.
Have fun fiddling, this IS a nice carb indeed!

Jetting-wise that should be a good setup, the AJ=1.2 & IJ25 I got as well - it purrs without shunting, go ride with less than 0.2 throttle and look down at your sprocket.... it should not hunt, just adjust the screw.
Main-wise I still dunno, should dyno this last bit actually - but it runs great everywhere!

So its all turned to custard.

I've owned this thing 6 months and not ridden it. Life and funds prevented me from buying the carby and starting to get it sorted.

Check out the airbox as I got it.

Under the tank. NZ border control would have freaked seeing all that dirt from USA.

Under the seat is also a mess.

Sweet wiring....

Out with the old...

Changing from Edelbrock to TM40 DSC_0819_zpshpxlqp1e

This is the game breaker, intake is black with exhaust gas and crud. Valves have a thick layer of burnt s^^*. Whole top end is toast. If the previous owner was this fussy with the air filter I'd imagine the oil and filter changes were few and far between. I was pushing it buying the carby with tight funds and baby #2 on the way. Kicking myself I brought it before pulling out the old one. It will be a year or more before we have spare money, so sorry this thread will be on hold until then. I will return......

I feel sick looking at the wiring....poor you can you not get the bike up and running even with no budget ?.....flush engine with some cheap oil and give her a good clean which is time but it's free ?.....

I gave her a thorough clean before removing the carby. I'm no expert but exhaust gasses in the intake means valves are not sealing, if the valves are that shot the piston and bore will also be wrecked. Its not worth trying to get it running as I fear it will further damage the engine. I cannot trust this bike until a complete rebuild is undertaken. beat head

Previous owner is AJ Zakarian from Las Vegas so if anybody knows him give him a back handed bitch slap for me. He was a complete a^^hole when bike was purchased and he keeps giving me unpleasant surprises with this bike. Alas she will be reborn as a magnificent bike, just not for a while....

That sucks, I have seen some bad wiring jobs but that might be the worst I have ever seen. Have you checked the valve clearance yet?
