1996 XR400 CDI fitted to XR650
Hello. I have a stock, but uncorked 2003 XR650r. I am interested in using the cdi unit from the 96-97 xr400 to add a little more low RPM torque. I am not concerned about the over rev the xr400 cdi will provide so long as the engine will not over rev to a point which causes internal failure. I am not a engine rever type rider. I know when to shift. I have read that this unit has 2 degrees advance more than the stock XR650r cdi unit and the same advance at high RPM as the XR650r cdi unit. I have a few questions for those that have done this mod.
1.) Will 2 degrees advance provide a noticeable enough torque increase to feel it? I am sensitive to engine response changes.
2.) Will 2 degree ignition advance cause pinging on regular pump gas? Right now i live at 5600' and ride up to 12,000' but also plan to ride this bike at see level.
3.) Is this the correct number marked on the pre smog 96-97 xr400 cdi "070000-2650? or is it 070000-2740?
Mods; If this post is in the wrong forum please move it to the correct forum and message me a link to its new location.

I swapped mine over to the 400 CDI some years back and I do think she performs better al low speeds etc, I am like you a slow low RPM rider....must be old like me ?

Mauser thanks for the reply. Do you still have the bike and the 96-97 XR400 cdi unit? If so would you be willing to verify which is the correct number i posted above. It can be found on the sticker attached to the CDI unit.

Found the answer to my question and found a used 2650 cdi on eBay.

Thanks Mauser. No need to check your cdi. The info in the link is very clear about the part number.
