I have two motorcycles. A TW200 and this XR650R. I'm very proud of it. Its the bike I always wanted. I told my brother one day I wanted a bigger bike, like for higher speeds better than my trusty, but slow TW200. So I said to him I was looking at an XR650L. My brother told me dont do it! get an R!!! He is bigtime into motorcycles so I went with his advice. I sure am glad I listened to him! I bought it from a white haired retired machinist who was the original owner. When I bought it, he had an Oregon title, baja light kit and was uncorked, other than that all stock. I put some cool aftermarket parts on the XR like Allied upper triple clamp and 1 1/8" cr hi bars. The engine is uncorked with uni air filter. The tires are Dunlop 606 front and a 130 size rear tire. On tuesday the new wheel bearings and collars with o-ring seals 2005 xr650r titled 41IIN068WbL._SX100_

Also I always hated the stock carb. It is terrible at on/off throttle situations especially intown riding. I decided to buy a mikuni pumper carb with cables and choke cables. Cant wait to install the new parts!

@ 140lbs and 5"9 when I get on this beast and wrap my wrist, it HAULS ASS!

Thanks Doc!
I build these grills on my spare time. The grill shown in the first picture I drove it to Texas and gave it to my sister.
I then built this smaller grill for me and my lady:

I went for a short ride on the dirt roads around my neiborhood with my new boots on. The boots take some getting used to on the gear shifting and brakes. It took me about 30 minuits and then i was able to feel much more confortable. The engine has way more power now with the pumper carb. I was sliding sideways in 5th gear on the dirt roads with just a slight twist of my wrist. All in all im happy with the mods and i love the bike. BRP smile

I imagine 4 photos:
1) std carb on bike with tank off
2) carb removed, like in missing between the two rubber parts
3) new carb half-in, left hanging there because it was time for coffee/tea/beer/lunch
4) side-view with carb & tank in place, already idling because the owner's impatient to get to ride it
BM's right Mauser, the actual swap is mere minutes, the cables will take a bit longer.
Getting the jetting correct however is an entirely different story, and adjusting the squirter proper is a lot of trial & error.... but all this could not be explained by photos.
Enjoy it, I found it a very pleasing mod.

Nope, no heating/denting tanks, that's with a CFR - mind, depending on the version, something to do with the throttle cable mechanism, some will fit as-is. A TM40 is a drop-in replacement fit-wise, however pls mind here too that the correct adaptors mounted to it are required.

Re-checking the dancing banana Mauser, does this mean you're going to be tempted to get a TM40?
It does make a diff, loads better/immediate response at small openings, and lifting the front (logs, ruts etc) is easier too.

Correct, no heating of stock gas tank.

The place to get the TM40 so that it is jetted and ready with the adapters installed in is: POWER BARN.
Mike (powerbarn) jetted my carb perfect. All I did was plop it in and it runs like a rapped ape.
No inline fuel filter yet. a straight thru one would work though.

The wheel beating kit is: Pivot works water tight wheel collar and bearing kit

I would not bother with a cam, the stock one makes plenty of power.

I rode the XR to a friends house which is about one and a half hours away mostly on the street but some dirt roads.
The XR attracts loads of attention. It sticks out like a big red pig on the street. The TM40 carb makes street riding SO nice its throttle response is so smooth its like riding a street bike. The only thing is with the knobbie tires it vibrates your hands a bit and your ass gets tired on the hard narrow seat. I loved every minute of it 2 thumbs

Here is the jet settings that work great on my bike which is a stock xr650r uncorked with an UNI air filter.
142.5 main
25 pilot
y1 needle
y4 needle jet
1.2 air set
fuel screw 2 turns out

The carb came with 4 extra jets, 2 larger and 2 smaller than installed, also 2 pilot jets, one smaller and one larger than what came installed. The bike starts on the first kick and runs really strong. I may try one size smaller jet and tighten the fuel screw 1/2 turn in just to see how it likes it leaner. But its just to toy with it because its running great right now.
The best part about the mikuni carb is it gives you complete control of the engine. Its like EFI, so smooth. rider

BMKTW2,

for very little money - and I notice you luuurve tinkering - you can buy a 140 main and a 27.5 idle jet.
Put that in and I bet your bike runs better, especially seeing you neither have the opened sidepanel nor bigger headers. It most probably also will start a notch easier when it will be getting really cold, couldn't help noticing your shed.
Try?
Oh, clip set to 3rd position I bet? It should with the above.
