for very little money - and I notice you luuurve tinkering - you can buy a 140 main and a 27.5 idle jet.
Put that in and I bet your bike runs better, especially seeing you neither have the opened sidepanel nor bigger headers. It most probably also will start a notch easier when it will be getting really cold, couldn't help noticing your shed.
Try?
Oh, clip set to 3rd position I bet? It should with the above.
I've got
Jets:
147.5
145
142.5 (installed)
140
137.5
Pilot Jets:
27.5
25 (installed)
22.5

Does the open side panels make a big difference? I was thinking about the black ones from xrs only but they cost so much... also I'm sort of worried about riding in the heavy rain.

I get a really bad vibration in my handlebars when riding on the street. What can I do to reduce the vibration? Is it the Protaper handlebars making it vibrate so badly?

Re: 2005 xr650r titled
from what I've read around online about these is that the most effect thing to get rid of those vibes is to install the solid aluminium hand/bar protectors.

Re: 2005 xr650r titled
So I put the 140 main jet and the 27.5 pilot. It runs great thru the power range but right off the idle, if you give it just a tiny blip of throttle, it skips and missfires, even shutdowns. I adjusted the mixture screw and it runs best all the way tightened in
I think I need to keep the 140 mainjet because the mid and hi range is perfect, but switch to the 22.5 pilot
What do ya'll think?

So I put in the 22.5 pilot with the 140 main. This time when I tighten up the mixture screw all the way, it kills the motor. I set the mixture screw 2 turns out. It runs great through the range but right off idle when you give it a couple little blips of the throttle it wants to kill the engine.
I can figure out whats wrong...

Re: 2005 xr650r titled
Ordered a 1.1 airjet and lowing the needle to the 3rd clip and going back to the 25pilot but sticking with the 140 main.

Re: 2005 xr650r titled
I got the airjet today and installed it. I also switched to the 25 pilot and lowered the needle 1 click. In the end its:
1.1 airjet
25 pilot
140 main
needle 2nd click
The XR pulls really strong like this. Very responsive and no more of the popping from the exhaust on decel.
The only time its not perfect is from idle if you blip the throttle lightly.
I have decided that the pumper does not like to be played with like that. The TM-40 runs perfect when riding. I can live with that.

I came up with a solution to the handle bar vibrations:
Double them up.
Double them up.

Huh, wazzat? Pls explain.
I got flattish bars but raised quite a bit, zero problem with vibrations - but then again I ride only off, not on.
What has rain got to do with an open sidepanel? Yes is makes a diff, but these two holes do too - that is if you haven't blocked the airway under the saddle with a battery or other rubbish. Start with making them, and then decide if you want the opened panel on the other side?
The 25 ij (which I had in on this trip) is too small, irrespective it it starts well. Mine did exactly that, 1 kick every time, and the idling & low pickup nigh on flawless..... but it runs hot too quick (compared to 2 others R's) on low openings, single tracking for instance. With a 27.5 & aj 1.2 all is still fine running-wise but it will not get hot too quick. Also, the transition from low to mid is a smidgeon better, which is to be expected if jetted a touch on the rich side - because it is probably, but this is better than running it hot.
My 140 main is too big, I have to try a 137.5, and note I do indeed have the open sidepanel but this is at altitude, some 1300 meters hasl.
Your remark about popping decel is nonsense, sorry, this is a thunper. Overly loud barking or large blue flames is obviously a sing of "wrongs" but anything from a burble (inevitable!) to banging (maybe a small leak between header & pipe?) is normal, part of the character of the beast, and certainly nothing to do with the jetting being 'good' - the latter is decided by running only, not overrunning.

I ride 50 miles each way on 80% street to get to where me and my buddys off-road together.
Street riding is the only time I have any problems with the vibration.
Double the grips. Put another grip ontop of the first ones. I love it.

I'm talking about water getting on the airfilter. I guess its not a big deal. I have ordered XRs only sidepanels to try it out.

I agree with you, even at 200ft above sealevel I would also like to try the 137.5 jet. I have tried the 27.5 PJ and it was no better than the 25.
Also you say that richen it up is best, then you talk about the 1.2 airjet? That is complete nonsense. A 1.2 would leans out the idle circuit from a 1.1.

With 27PJ 142.5MJ and 1.2AJ When I let off the accelerator while in gear traveling at speed, the exhaust will to pop pop pop pop constantly.
Now, with 25pj 140mj and 1.1aj it just unwinds WITHOUT 90% of all the popping.
I think if I put the 37.5 main jet in, it will pop even less.
I may try 137.5 main jet and the 27 pilot just to do 1 more test, keeping the 1.1 airjet.

Change the pressure to what? Ive had it @ 20psi down to 5psi and nothing in the range really cures it.

Ya I have spoke wrench, wheel balancer, trueing stand, new wheel bearings, spoke are tight, wheel is straight, balanced and the tire and tube are new.
You still never told me what pressure to put it at.

Today I re-jetted the mikuni again. I put in 27.5 IJ 137.5 MJ raised the needle to the 3rd position.
I'm going trail riding tomorrow so I will be able to report the changes.
Last time I was around 200degrees oil temp while crusing 65mph 14/45
I put in a 15/45 now so I think it will ride better. I wonder how it'll be in the woods...

I'm not eager to sell my XR... and I have over $5,000 invested including the cost of the bike.
So ask yourself, why would I lower my price? Because you shmucks dont like the number? pah
How about this, go find you a low mile, street legal, mint condition XR650R anywhere in the south east for less.

Man That is cheap in where Burp lives , also in australia the bike would sell real fast .
Different market here in UK , i have seen bikes that had few thousand pounds spend on them and people only offered 1600 £ for them over here , they dont know the difference between good bike and scrap metal .
All the Schmucks are riding BMW over here .
