Re: no thermostat
yes it needs one, otherwise it can run too cool and the cylinder will squeeze the fully expanded piston, causing it to rub more and possibly gall the piston and cylinder.

Re: no thermostat
I used one of these, just remember to remove the thingy blocking the bypass hole.

A very resounding YES!
You'll reduce the lifetime if it does not have one, so put one in.
XRsOnly sell one which opens a tad sooner (cooler), and this ain't a bad idea .... but riding without is!

yay or nay
the xr650r has a very small amount of coolant in its cooling system, approx 2-3litres.
if you live in an area where its near freezing its probably worth having one installed, if you only ever idle around and never open the throttle you probably need one, for most other people its surplus to requirement, it takes about 2-3minites to get piggy to operating temp, and thats when its std, mine isnt std and takes about 1-2minutes, i dont even have the housing for it (replaced it with a hi flow 2-1y tube)
for most brp owners, its the trouble with keeping piggy from overheating, thats the real concern.... !
