No Oil on dip stick
I have a extremely low hour 2001 XR650R. I cracked the right crankcase cover. I found one on ebay and bought it. I swaped my oil pump and new kick shaft seal and bearing. I did not prime my oil pump if thats possible. I put new filter in and 1.7 qts of oil in. Warmed it up and cant get any oil on dip stick. Put a total of 2 qts of oil in and no read on dip stick. I am clueless. Any Ideas would be really appreciated. This is my 4th XR650R. I know how to check the oil properly. Thanks in advance

Re: No Oil on dip stick
Have a look in the oil tank (frame)where the oil return line joins to see if oil is returning from the motor with the motor idling. might need a torch. I'm not sure whether this motor has a separate pump for scavenging.

I know you have had 4 XR's but you have got the oil filter the right way around ?....crack some pipes and check for oil

There is no oil coming from pump. I have almost exhausted my options

Oil filter in correctly
There is no oil returning from pump. I indeed did check my filter. Spring in first then oil filter with this side toward engine facing engine. I am stumpedMauser wrote:I know you have had 4 XR's but you have got the oil filter the right way around ?....crack some pipes and check for oil

OK with the cover off does the pump turn when you turn her over ?, wouldn't start her till you can confirm oil is present.

Re: No Oil on dip stick
This bike (like any other dry sump engine) has 2 oilpumps: a pressure/feed pump (the smaller one) and a scavenging one (larger).
If either is not working then don't run the bike!!!
All your oil must be in the engine - quite unlike it should be, all should be in the tank (= frame).
So, your scavenging pump aint working..... fix it!?

Oil Pump Turning

Yes the oil pump rotates when I turn engine over with kick starter and comp release pulled in.

Unsure what scavenging pump is. I will research and check it out. Thanks

Re: No Oil on dip stick
No need:
- pressure pump = gets oil from the tank and feeds all that needs lubricating, after which the oil seeks the sump
- scavenging pump = pumps the oil (and foam and air etc) from the sump to the tank
Both work simultaneously all the time hence an equilibrium is reached after the engine starts: the tank will be 'level' (fullest) whilst the sump is 'emptiest', excuse my raping the Inglis Langwish.
The obvious aim is to have the tank then on 'full' level ie with running engine (or seconds after you kill it).
The pressure pump is gravity-fed from the tank (on this bike anyway) aided by the pump's suction, and it will drain the tank's oil quickly - which, if this oil is not replenished by the scavenging pump (which in your case seems NOT to be working!!), will be empty veryvery quick leaving no oil for the pressure pump to pump... which means your engine runs without lubrication!
Clearer now I hope?

Re: No Oil on dip stick
Oh, becvause you have kept adding oil (to the tank) the engine is rather full with oil, in fact way too full - which is a bad thing as this may damage it, and no, this oil will NOT contribute to lubrication any of the parts (read: all!) which are lubed by the pressure system of the main pump (pressure pump).

Oil On Dipstick
I finally fixed my no oil pressure problem on my XR650R. The oil pump was out of time and not pumping. There was nothing is service manual about this. I did tons of research. Anyway that was it and now it is ready to BRAAAAAP!!
Thanks for all of the help!!!!
