Re-check valves I think you can set them in the wrong position and it will make them sound bad....?

that means not true test position ??

Cam chain , cam shaft might be fooked too as the rockers were totaly caput , valve adjustment ( do it with the  cover of , movig the rear wheel in gear its not as good ) ,   what play  have you got on the decompressor  lever ?
