XR650R Loud knocking after exit the HWY

Wassie's right! there just casting marks, very normal i have some on mine and some of my buds have them on there crf's and xr600's no worries! build on my friend

Thought you were on about the welded bit ?....looks to me like a repair ?

That mark's no worry, you better pay attention to the oilpump's housing - does it measure correct (according to the workshop manual)? Looks worn if not machined, better make sure it's all (rotors too) good still.

just noticed the nice job your machine shop did on the combustion chamber, however that also means you could have lowered the comp ratio, thats if your using the std piston, a hi-comp piston will rectify that and give you more grunt

Thanks for the comments, sorry I was lazy this winter and I didn't work on my bike so I started to work back on her late this year. I got the engine all back together, I did use the Stock piston since I wasn't sure about the HC one, well I will see how it feels with it first, if I have to change it later on I can do that anytime. Something to do to my piggy LOL! The only thing I am concern on my rebuilt is I have an extra washer laying on my working bench which I can not remember where this could be left behind! I check carefull all the manuals picture but I can not see I missed it! I hope it will not make a big deal out of it!.

Hey Guys, Any tip to start the engine after a rebuilt?

I would prime the oil filter and kick her slowly over by hand with the de-compressor in to make sure oil is everywhere, I think some even crack the oil hoses to make sure there is no air trapped.

Here is a short video after my rebuilt on the first starter, eventhough I got 2 bolts extra and a thrustwasher left over

Here is my XR on the road with an LED aditional fog lights! Running great and powerfull again! Just change the oil and filter after 1 week break in, it came out black from friction and the new Aluminum parts

I think the popping is normal...just un-burnt fuel being sucked through and then detonating in the system.....my 1300 pops like man on de-acceleration specially after opening her up first.....wakes the neighbours lol

What elevation do you mostly ride and what is your current jetting?
i run from sea level too about 500' open inlet, hrc tip, 68s pilot, b53e needle middle clip position, 172 main, fuel mixture screw 2.25 turns out from lightly seated and she pulls hard all through the rpm range has very minimal pop on decel

i have read on other sites that your pilot or slow jet as some call it may effect popping on decel and may need ti richen up the mixture via the fuel screw, but it took me a while to finally get mine to where she runs nearly perfect all through the rpm range being a little rich than lean

Toronto sea level is 76 mt and I can't remember but looks like I have the same set up like yours, I will have to double check , she was running nice last year but I went eith a HRC cam with the rebuilt and open up a bit the head port so for sure I will have to re adjust my carb

I wanted to make sure she wasn't leaking any oil behind the skid plate so There she is with the new skid plate on

let us know what you find when open up carb, i need too do a valve clearance check on mine hour meter reads 33.2 hours since last checked! the ole pig still fires up 1st or 2nd kick runs mint not sure if i should bother ? How often do you check your valves?

Checked mine once in 5 years...spot on but I'm not ham fisted like you lot

I haven't bother to check mine in the last 4 years like Mauser! Lol! I wouldn't bother but that's just me! It doesn't take much if you feel safe doing it go ahead and do it.

I want to change to fully synth oil, I know Burrp was saying some brands like the shell helix but is this car oil or special for motorcycles? also is too early to switch or should I wait a bit more?
